Mr. Finch has been educating young minds for over twenty-two years. He has taught English from grades 3-12, where his students consistently performed well on state assessments and other academic indicators. He has also served as a head varsity boys basketball coach, where his teams consistently won both on and off the court and served a successful school principal and leader. He also teaches teacher education courses on the collegiate level at a local university.
Mr. Finch believes when creating an educational environment, things should be centered around, "What's best for the students?" When students are put first, it creates a student-centered environment, which emphasizes students' individual needs, interests, and learning styles. In this setting, students have more choices in their learning, take ownership of their education, and collaborate with peers and teachers.
Mr. Finch's teaching philosophy is: Being an effective teacher can be a difficult task, but a teacher who accepts teaching as a challenge and as a responsibility will also find that it can provide rewards that are well worth the effort. He also believes that it is the teacher's responsibility to stay current in the field, engaging in research and participating in classes, conferences, workshops, and mentoring, which can improve subject matter of knowledge. He believes in order to be effective; teachers must know their students. Teachers must be aware of what students know when they come into the classroom as well as how to tap into that knowledge and build on it. He views teaching as a process of encouraging students to make connections between their experiences and the subject matter.
Mr. Finch, a native Texan, holds a bachelor's degree in English and a master's degree in Educational Administration.
